Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) in Assisted Human Reproduction can be applied to a large number of genetic conditions with the purpose of improving reproductive outcomes in at-risk families. To perform PGD, the embryos must first be biopsied. Of the advanced Assisted Human Reproduction techniques, the embryo biopsy requires delicate handling of the micro-injector and is thus the final step to be learned.
As with the aforementioned cases, there are several limitations to learning this technique. Training by performing biopsy simulations on mouse embryos makes it possible to acquire skills and competencies in embryo biopsy in a way that can be reproduced and evaluated before moving on to the Assisted Human Reproduction laboratory.
